         It was being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 20 to 31 August 1989 in 24 sports, namely archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, bowling, cycling, fencing, golf, football, gymnastics, hockey, judo, karate do, sepaktakraw, shooting-skeet and trap, pencak silat, taekwondo, swimming – diving and water polo, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, sailing-rowing- windsurfing, bodybuilding and weightlifting. Most gold medals were awarded to Indonesia with 103 gold, 77 silver and 71 bronze; to be followed by Malaysia and Thailand respectively. Participated 9 member countries were Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Lao PDR., Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
