         It was being held in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 11 to 20 October 1997 in 34 sports, namely archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, billiards-snooker, bodybuilding, bowling, boxing, canoeing, cycling, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, judo, karate do, pencak silat, rowing, sepaktakraw, shooting, softball, squash, Aquatics (swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming), traditional boat race, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball – beach volleyball, water sky, weightlifting, wushu, wrestling and sailing-windsurfing with a total number of 5,179 athletes. Most gold medals were awarded to Indonesia with 194 gold, 101 silver and 115 bronze; to be followed by Thailand with 83 gold, 97 silver and 77 bronze. Participated 10 member countries were Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
