         It was being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 8 to 17 September 2001 in 32 sports, namely archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, billiards-snooker, bowling, boxing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, judo, karate do, lawn bowls, netball, pencak silat, petanque, rowing, sepaktakraw, shooting-skeet and trap, squash, Aquatics (swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming), table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting, wushu and sailing-windsurfing. Most gold medals were awarded to Malaysia with 111 gold, 75 silver and 85 bronze; to be followed by Thailand with 103 gold, 86 silver and 89 bronze, while Indonesia came third with 72 gold, 74 silver and 80 bronze. Participated 10 member countries were Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
